About TLR Records
TLR Records is a new label, founded by renowned producer/songwriter Cory Rooney, partnered with experienced music attorney and licensing expert Jodi Chall. TLR exists to work closely with some of the most celebrated artists of of the past 5 decades. Its mission: to bring timeless messages from legends to modern audiences in new ways that are unmistakably their own.
It’s not easy being a creative force for many decades. Some might think an international star that’s sold millions of records years ago or earned many awards shouldn’t need anything else. What those people forget is that creative people need to create and the world wants to keep experiencing their creations. The ones we’ve chosen as our legends are more than simply the songs that made them famous.
Fame and success come in part from the magic of luck: being in the right place, at the right time, with the right materials and the right preparation. Once that time has passed, it’s sometimes difficult to recreate that magic. But with the right partners, these artists can create their own magic. TLR Records is that partner.
Why now?
Partners help to navigate new territory and challenges, and TLR is no exception. Entertainment as an industry can be fickle, driven by trends –– and perhaps most importantly, the money those trends can make. Because of this, the existing label structure may see these legendary artists as past their prime. They may think they wouldn’t get enough of a return on money they would need to spend to support. Or, they may believe these artists have nothing new to say that would be relevant to a modern audience. But when an artist put their personal soul and deep emotional truth into those classic songs, how can we allow them to fade away when they’re not young and so easily marketable anymore?
TLR has the tools to help these artists bring that soul and truth into today’s world. Despite the hardships artists face due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it’s time now to bring these timeless artists to today. Now is when we most need the joy and significance their songs have brought to our lives as we’ve played them at our weddings, funerals, graduations, and other significant moments.
The TLR Team
This is where Cory Rooney and Jodi Chall do their best work. Rooney is an artist and creative force, from his upbringing in a musical home with his parents Brenda Reid and Herb Rooney of the 60’s pop group “The Exciters” (“Tell Him,” “Do-Wah-Diddy,” “He’s Got The Power”), to producing and writing for artists like Mary J. Blige, Mariah Carey, Jennifer Lopez, Michael Jackson, Toni Braxton, Marc Anthony, Destiny’s Child and Jessica Simpson, just to name a few. Rooney also served as Senior Vice President of Sony Music for 15 years during the Mottola Years.
Chall got into the music industry by making sure a family friend’s musical career began in the right way. Chall focused her sights on innovating the outdated music licensing process. She founded SongLily with Les Borsai and launched innovate licensing solutions embraced by majors labels, publishers and licensees alike. Chall developed a reputation as a lawyer with a deep understanding of the needs of everyone in the music ecosystem and the vision to craft creative solutions. They share a commitment to securing artists’ best interests and giving artists the freedom to do their best work.
